What Coco Chanel Taught Me

By: Kelly Evanko

Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, aka Coco Chanel, coined as the most elegant woman ever, was a pioneer in the women’s fashion industry. She was credited single-handedly for liberating women from the corseted silhouette and popularizing the genre of casual chic by donning pants, thus becoming the feminine standard. Chanel was also known for the determination and ambition that she applied not only to her professional life, but to her personal life, as well. She was a dominant force in the business world due to all the powerful connections she made and maintained throughout her life. Over the years I have read many quotes from Coco Chanel and applied them to both my professional and personal life. I would like to share a few with you here.

“Don’t spend time beating on a wall, hoping to transform it into a door.” This is the one I learned from the most. I used to spend a lot of time thinking that if I banged on enough walls I could break through and have everything I ever wanted. I kept thinking that with enough hard work and attempts to please everyone, the door would magically open and I would be recognized. This was obviously not the case. All I got was a bruised ego. I learned that not every wall has a door and that there will always be obstacles in my way, but if I believe in myself enough, there will be no more walls to bang on and the path I choose will lead me straight to an open door.

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself, aloud.” For me this was a tough lesson to learn. I was always the girl who would think a lot yet keep my thoughts to myself for fear of looking like a fool if I…read more

Breakfast of Champions: Overnight Chia Seed Pudding

By: Carly Clydesdale

This time, breaky (breakfast) is overnight chia seed pudding! My friend Kylie taught me how to make this and I have to say that I’m obsessed. It takes 5 minutes to make it in the evening, and by morning, you have a delicious and filling breakfast at the ready.

Breakfast of Champions 3

–       ½ cup almond milk

–       1 scoop vanilla protein powder

–       3 tbsp chia seeds

Get ready for the elaborate instructions: mix the milk, protein powder and chia seeds together in a jar (or mug!), and put in the fridge overnight.

You must be thinking: “WAIT! THAT CAN’T BE IT!” Oh, but it is. In the morning, pull your pudding out of the fridge and add whatever fresh toppings you desire (I like chopped banana, blueberries, and/or cinnamon). BAM! Yummy, healthy, AND filling breakfast awaits you!

Skinny Lasagna

By: Emma Maddalosso

I think we can all agree that Italian cuisine is one of the best in the world, but sadly, Italian dishes are usually loaded with carbs. Not this time! We have adapted a traditional lasagna recipe and turned it into a carb free delicacy. By choosing aubergines over pasta, you will add lots of vitamins (mostly vitamin B1 and B6), as well as potassium and minerals (copper, magnesium and manganese). Aubergines are full of antioxidants, help lower cholesterol and are a great source of dietary fiber. Besides, I promise this lasagna  maintains all the flavor! It’s really easy to prepare and you will be out of the kitchen in less than an hour. So let’s do this!

Skinny lasagna- Copyright Pilar Fernandez (1)

You will need (Serves two):

250 gr. good quality veal mince meat

A big aubergine

150 gr. chopped onion

Extra virgin olive oil

A pinch of salt

Oregano and pepper (to taste)

300 gr. crushed tomato

A little bit of parmesan cheese, grated

Heat the olive oil in a large pan and cook the chopped onion on a medium to low heat until the onion has softened. Now, add the…read more

Breakfast of Champions: Almond Coffee Smoothie

By: Carly Clydesdale

This coffee smoothie is a variation of the one found on LaurenConrad.com. It may not be the most filling, but it is energizing, refreshing, and pairs perfectly with the rest of your breakfast! I love having this smoothie with some yogurt and berries or an English muffin with peanut butter.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

–       1 cup chilled coffee

–       4-5 ice cubes

–       1 cup almond milk (I like to use almond-coconut blend milk)

–       1 scoop vanilla protein powder

Blend ‘er all up and you have your morning coffee in the form of a yummy smoothie! I also like to add some berries on top (I like berries with coffee, weird?) Blueberries and sliced strawberries taste great. Don’t forget to eat something substantial with this drink; nothing is a substitute for a hearty breakfast, even a delicious coffee drink.

Clean Eating Chocolate Fudgesicles

By: Karielyn Tillman

Buying fudgesicle molds has been on my “to do” list for a while and I knew these Classic Chocolate Fudgesicles would be the first thing I would make with them

Clean Eating Chocolate Fudgesicles-1

With two young boys, I don’t know why it took me so long to get these, but I’m glad I did! I used an adapted ice cream version from my Cacao Nib and Mini Chocolate Ice Cream recipe for this basic chocolate ice cream treat. I remember eating fudgesicles back in the day. Anytime I had a choice of an “ice cream on a stick” treat, I always opted for the fudgesicles. Although those days are long gone, fudgesicles are just as bad now, if not worse, so why not make your own and treat your family to a healthier, yummier option?

Here’s the 17 ingredients in a traditional store-bought fudgesicles:

Fudgesicle Chocolate Fudge Ice Cream Bars

FoodFacts.com Rating:  “F”

While it doesn’t have a really long list of ingredients, pretty much everything in it is junk…GMO dairy, highly refined sugar, refined salt and lots of preservative. And, I don’t even see any type of chocolate in the ingredient list?….read more

Red or Blue? Avoiding Office Politics

By: Molly Tullis

No, I’m not actually referring to whether the bumper sticker on your car is of a donkey or a well-dressed elephant – or for some millennials, even a Green Peace sticker. Office politics are a beast all on their own and have a different way of bearing their ugly faces. While a political debate in an office space can be done intelligently and respectfully, office politics lend themselves to be more reminiscent of a scene from Mean Girls than West Wing. They are just that: a political game of co-workers usually resorting to gossip and back-end deals to try and secure promotions, bonuses, or even pay raises through relationships and back stabbing. Office politics can be toxic and usually involve destroyed relationships, hurt feelings, and are much more appropriate for an episode of Survivor than somewhere nine to five.

One of the first things that I was told upon entering my fashion industry internship was to avoid office politics at all costs. It seemed an easy enough rule; anyone knows in black and white situations that office politics are detrimental to a happy work environment. But about three weeks into the job, it became apparent that not all situations were plainly black and white. When dealing with office politics, it’s usually grey. I’ve combined the best three ways to identify office politics, and stop yourself from launching a campaign.
1. Gossip has the most to do with office politics. Most often called ‘water cooler talk’, it’s the little things that co-workers talk about on breaks in hushed whispers. The topics can range from who is getting fired, who’s getting hired, to, in my situation, which PR agent was going to get the best couture brand campaign. While the talks seem harmless and quite interesting, unless it has been confirmed by a higher up and it’s common knowledge – try not to talk about it. Especially in fashion, which is known for back stabbing and ruthless people (Devil Wears Prada, anyone?), these kinds of rumors and gossip can only ruin your reputation as well as that of others. There is one woman in my company who is always starting a conversation with, “Did you hear about…?” and everyone in the company knows not to trust her with confidential information. When it’s time for promotions, if you can’t be trusted, you can’t be promoted.
2. Stop it when you see it. I’m not saying that you need to monitor the hallways with your hall monitor badge and flag anyone having a hushed conversation by the water cooler. What you should do, however, when someone approaches you with office gossip is make a smooth transition. This is a skill that I’ve been taught for whenever I don’t want to answer a particular question. If you work in media, then you know the specific skill set I’m talking about. If anyone approaches you…read more

Nouveau Noir

By: Saloni Mahendro

Ah, black – the ultimate in chic and mysterious, the go-to color for punks, goths, and fashionistas everywhere. Many of us still see black as failsafe, but our mistake lies in the fact that our ‘goes with everything’ mentality limits us to wearing it in only one way. We are too quick to dismiss wearing all black as boring when in actuality, if done right, wearing this color head to toe can give you that effortlessly chic look without even having to try. The trick is to know when and how to wear certain pieces and most importantly, how to ensure that you don’t get lost in the darkness.

Noveau Noir

Transitioning this monochromatic look from day to night is probably its biggest advantage, especially on those days where your evening plans are uncertain. We’ve all had those moments where an after work something or the other comes up and we find ourselves with little to no time to change. Several little tricks can spruce up any all black outfit in a few seconds, like putting on a statement necklace or a funky bracelet. We often use accessories to compliment our attire but in this case, a chunky necklace set against a black blouse or even a basic black tee suddenly adds interest to an otherwise simple outfit.

With lipsticks, most women are quite the experts in knowing what colors suit their skin. However, many of us also work within a limited color palette because our wardrobes simply don’t allow for neon pinks or vibrant oranges. However, when set against a perfectly…read more

Athletic Wear Leads to a Healthy Lifestyle

By: Alecia Smith

Athletic wear and styling has become a hot fashion trend that’s been taken with much excitement and interest by the industry. It is now super trendy to wear striped athletic pants, yoga pants, jogger pants, hoodies, and tennis shoes to places that don’t necessarily include the gym and the trend allows comfort and style to blend seamlessly.

This new styling look not only shows an innovative change in fashion, but it also shines light into an important change in the commercial side of the industry. Clothing companies are now focused on selling more than just a product. They are now gearing their tools to sell a lifestyle and, with the ongoing topic of healthy living and obesity rates in the U.S., choosing to follow the new athletic-wear trend can promotea a healthier way of life. The clothing we put on to tackle the day can definitely have an effect on our choices and our behavior. I, personally, know that my attitude towards the day is different when I wear sweats or my pj’s as opposed to a dress or even jeans and a nice top. So what can we do to motivate ourselves to hit the gym or go for that run we kept avoiding? The answer may now be in what we choose wear!

Athletic Wear

As a result of the heated reaction from customers to the new sporty trendy, athletic wear is now more colorful, better fitting, and, surprisingly, more fun to shop! I never thought I would say “I’m excited to go shopping for gym clothes or workout wear!” But brands such as Lululemon, Athleta, Zella, Nike, and other traditional sports brands have tuned up the volume. Their clothing options not only allow you to wear them to the gym, but they are stylish enough for you to wear to run errands, meet friends for lunch, and more.

There appears to have been a shift from just focusing on the function of athletic clothing, to focusing on both function and fashion. This is a huge change for women. I’m sure there are some of you who remember the days of Umbro and Adidas (before this style update), when we had to wear oversized workout clothing that….read more

Beauty Hacks: 6 Glam Girl Tricks for the Office

By: Bree Aylwin

Remember those days when you showed up at the office looking and feeling your best – your hairs perfectly done, makeup meticulously applied, and outfit flawlessly paired – only to find that half way through the day your hair’s falling flat, makeup is wearing off & your outfit looks drab? Yeah, me too. Thankfully though, my (many) experiences of the midday beauty-slump helped me come up with a few quick tricks to keeping that glam style & look last from dawn til dusk.

Beauty Tips

1. Use a setting spray on your makeup before leaving the house. This will set your makeup so it lasts longer & stays put throughout your busy day
2. Before applying your perfume, apply a bit of unscented lotion to the areas you apply your perfume; this little trick will help hold the scent there so it lasts all day!
3. Leave the bright lipstick at home. Sure, we all love a bright lipstick but they can be pretty high maintenance. Instead opt for a tinted lip balm that you can apply without the hassle of bleeding or getting it on your teeth!…Read the rest of the tips here!
